How to Make Your Facial Results Last
A good facial leaves your skin clearer, calmer and brighter than it walked in. How long that lasts is mostly decided in the days that follow, and none of it is complicated. Here is what actually keeps the results going, from the treatment bed to your bathroom shelf.
The first day is the gentle one. Your skin has just been cleansed, exfoliated and fed, and it is more receptive than usual. Skip makeup if you can, keep your hands off your face, and give the gym, the sauna and long hot showers a miss until tomorrow. Let the treatment finish its work.
Sunscreen is the whole game. Fresh, exfoliated skin burns faster and pigments faster, and one bright afternoon can undo a month of brightening. A broad spectrum SPF every morning, reapplied if you are outside, is the single habit that protects everything else you paid for.
Do not scrub. Facials often include a professional exfoliation, so your skin does not need another one at home for at least a week. Over-exfoliating is the fastest way to a tight, red, flaky face. Cleanser, serum, moisturiser and SPF is plenty.
Stick with the ranges your therapist recommended. Professional lines such as O Cosmedics, Nimue and Pure Fiji are chosen for your skin type and concern, and they are designed to keep working between visits. Swapping in random products from the supermarket shelf is where most people lose their results.
Watch the strong actives. If your facial included a peel, enzyme or resurfacing step, hold off on retinol, glycolic acid and other actives for a few days unless your therapist told you otherwise. Reintroduce them slowly and your skin stays comfortable.
Drink water and get your sleep. It sounds like a poster on a clinic wall, and it is still true. Hydrated, rested skin holds onto the plump, even look a facial gives it. Late nights and dehydration show up on the face before anywhere else.
Notice how your skin behaves in week two and three. That is your skin's natural rhythm showing, and it tells you when to come back. Most people find results start to soften around the four to six week mark, which is why regular facials build on each other instead of starting from scratch.
And book the next one before you leave. A course of facials timed to your skin's cycle does far more than a one-off before a big event. Your therapist can map it out for you, including which treatment to try next and what to do at home in between.
