Understanding ingredients and raw materials

Q: Is it adviseable to use alcohol on the skin?
A:
One needs to distinguish between the different types of alcohol.

Cetearyl alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols consisting primarily of cetyl and stearyl alcohols. It is produced from the reduction of plant oils and natural waxes and is used as an emollient for dry skin, to give high viscosity to a finished product or as a highly stable co-emulsifier and is thus suitable for use in skin care products.

SD alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol in high concentrations can be drying and cause barrier disruption on the wrong skin type. It is seldom used in skin care products.
back to questions

Q: Why is mineral oil used in some cosmetics?
A:
Mineral oil has received a lot of negative publicity due to it`s association with petroleum and many sources have classified it as comedogenic, especially in leave on cosmetics. It is however still a safe and useful ingredient if used in a cosmetic grade. Some products use mineral oil in cleansing products, especially for sensitive skin as it does not strip the skin of it`s natural oils.

Liquid paraffin which is consumed internally as a pharmaceutical, is the same as a high quality mineral oil. According to some sources, mineral oil and petrolatum are considered safe and non-irritating moisturising ingredients. it is sometimes perceived to be not natural, which ironically it is, and therefore vegetable oils take preference, albeit more expensive.

As a derma - cosmeceutical product, Nimue does not encourage the general use of mineral oil, being a film forming ingredient on the surface of the skin, creates artificial moisturisation that the skin becomes dependant on, rather than promoting natural moisturisation.
back to questions

Q: What are parabens?
A:
It is one of the most commonly used groups of preservatives in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries for the past 80 years.

Parabens provide bacteriostatic and fungistatic activity against a diverse number of organisms and are considered safe at the correct concentration in cosmetics, particularly in light of their low sensitising potential.

Globally, parabens are used more than all other preservatives together. In fact, 87% of skin care preservatives are parabens.

There is however, a trend towards the use of natural plant based preservatives, however, their efficacy have not been proven 100% in a variety of products.
back to questions

Q: Why is propylene glycol included in some cosmetics?
A:
It is a very commonly used humectant in skin care, hair care and personal products, since it absorbs water from the environment. This ingredient is also linked to some negative publicity, however, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that it is entirely safe for use in cosmetic preparations at specified levels. This material is often confused with Ethylene Glycol, which is dangerous, but never used in the cosmetic industry.

[the above information does not necessarily imply that these ingredients are used in Nimue products. Nimue constantly strives to provide educational information.

A:
It is a skin condition that affects the skin colour of people of any race and consists of pigmented or “uneven” areas of discolouration, generally found on the face, neck and hands.

Skin darkening occurs when too much melanin or natural pigment is produced and forms irregular darker deposits in the skin.
back to questions

Q: What causes hyperpigmentation?
A: Years of sun exposure causes discolouration that presents as visible signs of photoageing. Skin may also become discoloured due to hormonal fluctuations or any trauma to the skin.
back to questions

Q: What are the different types of hyperpigmentation?
A:

Appears as blotchy brown spots often occurring on cheeks, forehead and temples. This condition is usually associated with hormonal changes. Pregnancy, menopause and contraceptive medication can trigger or aggravate the production of melanin.

Age spots/Liver spots
Also known as solar lentigines are small darkened patches on skin of older adults due to excess sun exposure over years.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Treatment of dry, dehydrated skin

Q: What external treatment can be applied for this skin condition?
A:
Nimue’s core prescriptions are aimed at normalisation through stimulation of skin functions. Applying moisture in the form of O/W emulsions to the skin surface in the form of masks, serums and treatment creams will have an immediate effect. A lightweight product will provide hydration and barrier protection without suppressing the skin’s natural moisturising ability.
back to questions

Q: What internal treatment can support this skin condition?
A: Introducing water to the tissue by drinking adequate amounts and reducing chemical and physical dehydration factors such as coffee, alcohol, sun exposure, air conditioning and medication such as diuretics.A balanced diet including essential fatty acids, nuts and fruit will also assist.
back to questions

Q: What ingredients in skin care products are effective for this condition?
A: Phytoceutical and certain biotechnological ingredients such as glycosaminoglycans, hyaluronic acid, low molecular weight essential fatty acids, amino acids and mucopolysaccharides are some of the ingredients that contribute. Modern delivery systems can further enhance the properties and efficacy of the treatment.
back to questions

Q: Can an oily skin be dehydrated?
A: Yes, it can be even though it exhibits excess oil. If you attempt to strip skin of all oil content, the skin can become even oilier.
back to questions

Q: Is the use of an oil rich cream recommended for a dry skin?
A: No, products that contain fats, oils and waxes can clog pores and make the skin problem worse by overloading it and suppressing the skin functioning, however there are new hydrophilic and lipophilic ingredients that can alter this chemistry.
back to questions
